As any prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
- A different innovative game missed out that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
