RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
