A minimum of 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in national works. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
